In a significant effort to enhance blood safety measures in Zambia, the World Bank has earmarked $3.5 million for the Zambia National Blood Transfusion Services (ZNBTS). Ackim Fock, the World Bank Country Manager, unveiled this allocation, stressing its strategic use in revamping provincial blood centers, establishing blood hubs, and providing resources for blood mobilization, collection, and distribution. Representing Dr. Ackim Fock, Senior Operations Officer John Makumba highlighted that these funds will be disbursed across the next 18 months to aid ZNBTS in safeguarding Zambia’s blood supply. The funding will specifically target refurbishing 10 provincial blood centers, setting up 20 fully equipped blood hubs with refrigeration facilities, and procuring vehicles dedicated to blood mobilization, collection, and distribution nationwide.
During the turnover ceremony of six utility vehicles, overseen by Health Minister Sylvia Masebo, MP, a significant stride was taken toward advancing universal health coverage and ensuring prompt access to safe blood for all patients in need. Minister Masebo outlined key government commitments and objectives, expressing confidence in the vehicles’ intended use to benefit citizens, particularly children and mothers. Emphasizing ongoing efforts to refine blood transfusion policies, improve infrastructure and equipment, and ultimately save more lives, the minister reiterated dedication to implementing policies aimed at optimizing health financial resources, ensuring blood services remain free for patients.
The minister acknowledged the pivotal role of blood donors, urging their continued support in promoting a culture of blood donation and sharing positive experiences. Gratitude was extended to the World Bank for their assistance under the Zambia COVID-19 Emergency Response and Health Systems Preparedness Project. The six donated vehicles were allocated to the Western, Southern, North Western, Eastern, Central, and Muchinga Provincial Blood Centers. Plans are underway to distribute four more vehicles to the remaining provinces, affirming the government’s commitment to bolstering blood safety and healthcare infrastructure countrywide.
